HIGHER NUMBER OF DIARRHEA CASES REPORTED FOLLOWING BLACKOUT
August 18, 2003 AP
The New York City Department of Health has detected a "higher-than-usual" number of diarrhea complaints throughout the city's emergency rooms. Officials say they are concerned the cases may be related to food that spoiled during the blackout. The Department of Health is urging people to throw out any food that may have rotted. The department also warns against tasting food to see if it's bad. Previously cooked rice and potatoes, dairy products, meat, chicken and seafood are NOT safe to eat after prolonged periods without refrigeration. Hard, processed cheeses, butter and margarine, opened fruit juices, bread products, mustards and jellies, peanut butter, spices and raw vegetables can be kept for a limited time without refrigeration.
*Hint I wouldn't be eating out if I lived back east.
