In 1998, Mr. Lane was scheduled to appear in a Tennessee court for a pre-trial hearing on two misdemeanor traffic charges. Mr. Lane is a paraplegic. He had appeared at the courthouse previously for his arraignment on the same charges, and discovered that the courtroom was on the second floor. Of a building with no elevator.

Because Mr. Lane is an amputee, he did the only thing he could under the circumstances: He crawled up the stairs until he reached the second floor. Needless to say, the experience was humiliating. (link)
