Green Light For Legal Pot
Nicholas Kristoff wrote an editorial in the NY Times today, favoring the legalizing of marijuana at a state level. Kristoff points out that the income states will incur will be substantial enough to provide children with a better education. Who could be against that? Mostly the Mexican cartels and gangs that control the market.
Here are some current and interesting facts about Oregon's successful medical marijuana program from the Fall 2010 Mama's newsletter:
Oregon's Medical Marijuana Program (OMMP) has 45,123 patients.
Approximately 1000 patients a month apply.
3,518 MD's recommend OMMP for patients. 9up 109 since June 2010)
OMMP staff grew from 22 to 27 employees since June 2010.
....legalizing and taxing marijuana would bring in substantial sums that could be used to pay for schools, libraries or early childhood education. A Harvard economist, Jeffrey A. Miron, calculates that marijuana could generate $8.7 billion in tax revenue each year if legalized nationally, while legalization would also save the same sum annually in enforcement costs.
