If you are like me and have a genetic predisposition for chronic illnesses you are still not protected against discrimination in the work place or by insurance companies. Despite 12 years of legal maneuvering, legislation was blocked by a Rebooblican from Oklahoma.
The ironic part is that we are all victims of genetic mutations. The average person has about 6 mutations in their DNA. Virtually no one is immune to genetic mutations that can alter ones health in serious or non-serious ways.
Every individual should have the guaranteed right to have their genetic background kept private. Too bad we aren't quite there yet.
Attempts in the US to ban genetic discrimination in insurance and employment have hit a speed bump. After 12 years of political wrangling, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act was poised to pass a Senate vote last week - until Oklahoma Republican senator Tom Coburn suddenly moved to block the bill.
